detail spec:

Panasonic's projector retains an air of quality despite its boxy looks. At 297 x 209mm, it's one of the larger competitors, but its weight of only 2.2kg means it retains portability.

In our tests it performed well. Halos, focus and pixel tracking saw no point dropping and nor did any of the colour-purity tests. But, as with other LCD projectors, it fell down in the colour-combination test by failing to satisfactorily display cyan with green, red with magenta and yellow with white. It also displayed faint but abundant banding in our colour ramps, although it scored top marks in everything else. Most notably, it was the only projector to score top marks in the colour spectrum test, which means that no individual colour is overpowering.

The PT-LC76E didn't cause any concern in the real-world tests either and even impressed us with its lack of grain in the DVD movie. Light leakage was uniform with nothing appearing at either side, although a moderate 19mm was visible at both top and bottom. A patch contrast score of 29 was average, though.

The main problem is the amount of light leaked from the projector's air vents. It almost lit up our entire test room because of its bright 1,600 ANSI lumens lamp, which we measured at 1,413. There's also the associated problem of needing a large amount of cooling, placing the Panasonic among the loudest on test. Fortunately, economy mode is still very bright (rated at 1,280 ANSI lumens) and the fan becomes significantly quieter than the Toshiba's.

Such a combination is good, as it means the Panasonic can function admirably in both large rooms where noise isn't much of a problem and small rooms where it is. If you exclusively want to use a projector in a large room, then it can't compete with the Canon, which could almost stop ships running aground with its 2,500 ANSI lumens.

There are some interesting features on offer, too. In addition to the D-SUB input, there's a video-out port that can also be used as a second video-in. An index feature allows you to view both sources simultaneously. There's also an on-board menu and directional navigation button. These complement the S-Video, composite video, RCA audio ports and the serial port. The infrared remote is credit card-sized and intuitive. It has a potentially useful freeze feature but no laser pointer.

Overall, the Panasonic is very desirable, with its main benefit over the similarly priced Toshiba being a much quieter economy mode. It only misses out on an award by the narrowest of margins.
