FIFA World Cup atau lebih dikenal dengan Piala Dunia adalah salah satu kompetisi sepak bola terbesar di Dunia yang mempertemukan negara-negara terhebat, kompetisi ini digelar setiap 4 tahun sekali. Tahugak sejarah mulainya piala dunia?

Sebenarnya, sebelum piala dunia dari FIFA ini diselenggarakan, lebih dulu telah ada sebuah kompetisi atau lebih tepatnya turnamen pada tahun 1909 yang bernama Piala Sir Thomas Lipton, dimana turnamen tersebut berlangsung di Torino, Italia. Dalam kompetisi tersebut ada 3 peserta yang turut berpartisipasi, mereka adalah Italia, Jerman, dan Swiss, ketiga negara tersebut mengirimkan tim terhebat mereka. Inggris sendiri yang tergabung dalam FA menolak untuk ikut dalam ajang tersebut.

FIFA sebagai Federasi Sepak Bola tertinggi saat itu baru membicarakan rencana mengenai pengadaan kompetisi sepak bola dunia pada tahun 1904, di Paris pada saat itu FIFA baru saja terbentuk, dan pada tahun 1928 rencana tersebut baru dibicarakan dengan matang dan mendapat persetujuan dari Jules Rimet sebagai Presiden Persatuan sepak Bola Prancis atau FFFA, nama Jules Rimet sendiri kini diabadikan dalam bentuk sebuah Trophy Piala Dunia berlapiskan emas bernama Piala Jules Rimet yang diciptakan oleh seorang asal Prancis bernama Abel La Fleur, yang kemudian di revolusi oleh FIFA melalui seniman Silvio Gazzaniaga.

Akhirnya, pada tahun 1930 FIFA secara resmi menggelar FIFA World Cup atau yang kita kenal dengan nama Piala Dunia, dimana sesuai dengan kesepakatan akan berlangsung dalam 4 tahun sekali. Piala dunia pertama saat itu berlangsung di Urguay, dimana pertandingan pertama dalam kompetisi pertama dalam sejarah itu adalah antara Amerika Serikat vs Belgia, dan Prancis vs Meksiko. Uruguay pun berhasil menjadi Juara Piala Dunia pertama saat itu, dan Guillermo Stábile adalah pemain legendaris yang meraih Sepatu Emas (top skorer) pertama dalam sejarah.
