I adhered to nine to ten minutes per quarter to generate realistic scores at default configurations, inching closer to the entire 12 minutes of a real game.

To further increase the feeling of realism, NBA 2K19 is absolutely gorgeous in motion. Even excluding the stellar HDR service, tweaks to character models and textures bring out myriad small details. Beards seem better than anywhere else. Additionally, a brand new manufacturing package is set up this year, from pregame national anthems to hilarious pieces from the studio group of Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith. The group's character models require a do-over, but their interactions stay natural. Game comment brings over some recognizable lines (Kevin Harlan yields) yet continues to advance with guest commentators (from Kobe Bryant to ’96 dunk contest champ Brent Barry).

Of course, it is not surprising that NBA 2K19 appears great; the series has looked the part since its advent on the Dreamcast, staying applicable visually and staking out its portion of basketball civilization. NBA 2K19 continues the trend, capturing the feel of basketball's metropolitan centers from The Neighborhood.

It's too bad, then, the Neighborhood is covered in ads and persistent microtransaction begging. The growing push to spend real dollars on VC impacts those seeking to build even the most basic of player avatars. It is too much in NBA 2K19, holding back nearly every mode and customization alternative. MT NBA 2K19 is an unavoidable truth. But on the court -- particularly in the excellent franchise manner, free of the grasp of microtransactions -- NBA 2K19 lives up to its predecessors and at times even bests them.
