Qiraat itu artinya bacaan. Dari sini, qiraat berarti memiliki akar kata yang sepadan dengan kata al-Qur�an.

Jadi singkatnya qiraat adalah suatu aliran bacaan al-Qur�an yang mana penyebutan huruf maupun pengucapan bentuk bacaannya berbeda-beda menurut para ahli qiraat dan masing-masing mengakui keabsahan bacaan itu.
