Kinkaku-ji (or, more formally, Rokuon-ji) is better known to western tourists as the Golden Pavilion. It was built by the third Ashikaga shogun, Yoshimitsu, in the 14th century, to serve as his retirement villa. He directed that upon his death, the building would be converted into a temple.
