Audience A3 3" Full Range Driver
Audience's A3 is a breakthrough full range loudspeaker driver design comprised of the patented XBL motor, patent-pending suspension, and a patent-pending basket. The 3" A3 features exceptionally flat response from 40 Hz to 22 kHz, very high power handling, and superior dynamic range. Built like a high-power subwoofer driver that employs a large neodymium motor structure, big voice coil, and suspension venting, the A3 is capable of 12 mm of usable excursion with less than 1 dB compression at levels up to 95 dB SPL. Despite this brute-strength functionality, the driver is ultra-responsive at 2.5 grams total moving mass, which provides outstanding resolution and dynamics.

The XBL A3 motor design generates a uniform force over the excursion range, resulting in significantly reduced distortion and power compression. This topology's extremely low voice coil inductance ensures flat response to higher frequencies. The A3's pole piece venting is also unusual in that a vent of this size is usually only seen in much larger subwoofer-type drivers. This large aperture has radiuses on both ends to prevent turbulence—its high-volume airflow cools the voice coil for superior power handling.
An exceptionally rigid curvilinear-design cone is manufactured from anodized aluminum-magnesium alloy. The concave dust cap is made of a proprietary material that provides constrained layer damping, thereby controlling cone break up and improving high frequency dispersion.
The uniquely "S"-shaped surround provides large linear excursions without shrouding the cone, and does so with uniform resistance in both directions. The A3 spider was designed with special materials and geometry that maximize diaphragm and yet is of a size usually associated only with much larger drivers.
A patent-pending basket supports the motor structure and eliminates typical resonances; it is non-obstructive and avoids trapped air volumes. The mechanical design was extensively refined using state-of-the-art Finite Element Analysis to ensure the absence of mechanical resonance problems.
