Jepang Siap Intervensi Lagi Lawan Penguatan Yen

INILAH.COM, Tokyo - Jepang tidak akan mengesampingkan untuk mengambil langkah apapun untuk bertempur menghentikan langkah spekulatif di pasar mata uang.

Menteri Keuangan Jun Azumi seperti dikutip Reuters mengatakan Selasa (7/2), data menunjukkan Tokyo menghabiskan kira-kira 1 triliun yen (US$13 miliar) pada November tahun lalu untuk intervensi dan itu belum pernah diumumkan sebelumnya. "Jika pergerakan spekulatif menjadi jelas dan pasar bergerak menyimpang dari fundamental ekonomi dan spekulan mendistorsi pasar untuk kepentingan mereka sendiri, saya akan mengambil langkah apapun jika diperlukan untuk melindungi kepentingan nasional Jepang," tandas Azumi.

"Seperti yang saya katakan sebelumnya (ketika Jepang terakhir intervensi), saya akan tidak mengesampingkan setiap langkah-langkah," katanya pada konferensi pers setelah rapat kabinet, seraya mengeluarkan peringatan kuat untuk melawan kenaikan yen terlalu banyak.

Jepang menghabiskan 8 triliun yen untuk untuk intervensi di pasar uang per 31 Oktober guna mencegah penguatan yen yang merusak ekonomi, dan mengumumkan hal yang sama hari ini.

Tokyo menyusul kenaikan pergerakan dengan menjual sekitar 1 triliun yen (US$13,05 miliar) untuk intervensi diam-diam dari 1-4 November, data Menteri Keuangan menunjukkan selasa. Data juga menunjukkan bahwa Tokyo tidak mengintervensi euro terhadap yen selama kuartal terakhir.

Para pengambil kebijakan di Jepang khawatir bahwa penguatan yen dapat menambah melemahkan ekspor dan mungkin kerapuhan pemulihan ekonomi dari kerusakan yang ditimbulkan gempa bumi dan tsunami tahun lalu.

NEW YORK - Pasar saham Amerika Serikat (AS) kembali menguat usai Yunani dan krediturnya menemukan kata sepakat soal utang.

Sebelumnya, Yunani mengumumkan telah berkomimen untuk memotong biaya dan terhindar dari default pada utang yang jatuh tempo pada bulan depan. Walau begitu, pasar saham terlihat masih menurun. Analis mengatakan pasar telah memperkirakan kesepakatan Yunani dan memperingatkan bahwa Eropa masih menghadapi masalah.

"Kita masih memiliki banyak pekerjaan rumah," kata kepala analis UBS Wealth Management Jeremy Zirin seperti lansir dari Associated Press (AP), Jumat (10/2/2012).

Pada akhir perdagangan Kamis waktu AS, indeks Dow Jones Industrial naik 6,51 poin ke 12.890,46. Indeks Standard & Poor 500 naik 1,99 ke 1.351,95. Dan indeks komposit Nasdaq naik 11,37 ke 2.927,23.

Zirin mengatakan, pasar berasumsi Yunani memang akan mencapai kesepakatan dan terhindar dari default. Kesepakatan itu menyerukan Yunani untuk melakukan pengurangan tajam dalam pekerjaan pemerintah dan pengeluaran.

Technical analysis suggested spot gold could fall to $1,698 during the day, Reuters market analyst Wang Tao said.

"My phone hasn't rung for a long while," said a Singapore-based dealer. "Unless prices break above $1,755 or below $1,700, physical buyers aren't interested," said a Singapore-based dealer.

Menurutnya, kondisi Eropa yang tengah tertimpa krisis, bisa memakan waktu lebih dari satu dekade. "Jepang yang pernah mengalami kondisi serupa akibat membengkaknya bisnis perumahan dan krisis perbankan, tidak mengalami pertumbuhan selama 25 tahun," tuturnya.

"Itu akan menciptakan ketegangan dalam Uni Eropa, yang bisa menghancurkan Uni Eropa sendiri. Dan itu bahaya nyata." tambahnya.

Paket pemotongan anggaran, upah dan pensiun yang akan diterapkan parlemen Yunani, lanjut Soros, belum tentu akan berfungsi dalam jangka panjang. "Namun hal tersebut cukup menenangkan Anda dalam waktu enam bulan ke depan." ujarnya.

"Yunani adalah negara sakit yang telah 'salah penanganan' oleh otoritas Eropa dan akan terus menjadi iritasi dan masalah bagi Eropa," kata Soros.

Perdana Menteri Yunani Lucas Papademos kemarin menyetujui pemotongan anggaran yang dibutuhkan untuk mengamankan paket dana talangan kedua dari zona euro.

Sementara perekonomian di Amerika Serikat menunjukkan beberapa tanda-tanda kebangkitan. "Permasalahan yang Obama warisi, karena dia datang sesaat setelah krisis keuangan. Lebih besar dan tidak ada satu presiden pun yang mampu menuntaskannya dalam waktu singkat," tuturnya.

"Jadi siapapun yang akan terpilih nantinya, memiliki kesempatan yang lebih baik untuk lebih sukses dari Obama." tambahnya.

Soros mendukung sikap Obama yang menerapkan 'aturan' Warren Buffet yaitu semua orang yang pendapatannya lebih dari US$1 juta per tahun akan dikenakan pajak minimal 30%.

Gold Up After A Dip Near $1700

Gold futures surged back in the Asia session today after falling near $1700 levels on Friday a near term support level for the commodity. This week we may see some gains in the metal towards $1760 levels.

Broad gains for Asia on Monday followed news that Greece approved a package of austerity measures which international backers had demanded before they will sign off on 130 billion euros ($176.6 billion) of fresh aid.

The vote came amid violent protests in Athens against the latest round of deep spending cuts and public-sector job layoffs. Without the bailout - the second in two years - Greece would have been insolvent and would be forced to default on its debt next month when it needs to redeem �14.5bn of loans.

On the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures for April delivery is up $4 at $ 1730 levels. It settled at $1,723.95 a troy ounce on Friday, shedding 0.54% over the week, the second consecutive weekly decline.

Gold prices came off their lows after the CME Group, operator of the Comex reduced the amount of cash that traders must deposit for speculative positions by 12% to USD10,125. The new rates will be effective after the close of trading Monday, the company said in a statement.

MCX Benchmark gold futures may start today's session near Rs. 28300 levels with supports near Rs. 28200 levels.

This week, euro zone finance ministers are expected to meet on Tuesday to discuss Greece's bailout deal, which should lead to a final approval by the country's international lenders, including the International Monetary Fund and the ECB.

Investors will also be awaiting preliminary data on euro zone gross domestic product and U.S. retail sales, to assess the impact of the fiscal crisis in the euro zone on global growth.

Gold gains on Chinese buying

Gold strengthened on Monday in line with gains in shares and the euro after Greece's parliament finally approved a deeply unpopular austerity bill to secure a second bailout from the European Union and the IMF to avoid bankruptcy.

Physical buying from China also helped lift gold up $US6.10 an ounce to $US1725.49 in Asian afternoon trade. Bullion fell to $US1703.69 on Friday, its lowest since late January, as uncertainty over negotiations for Greece's bailout package prompted investors to cash in.

The Greek parliament approved on Monday the deeply unpopular austerity bill, while serious violence broke out on the streets of Athens and spread across the country.
The European Union meets on Wednesday to discuss giving a seal of approval for the new 130 billion-euro bailout.

"We are still looking for more measures out of Europe before we see a sustainable risk rally. Yes, perhaps it's good that we have a second bailout package and we are sure that at least we are not going to see Greece defaulting," said Ong Yi Ling, an analyst at Phillip Futures.

"I am looking for the resistance for gold at about $US1760. That will be the first resistance and the second one is at about the $US1800 level. For gold to break the $US1800 level, we need more measures, I would say."

US gold for April delivery rose $US3.20 to $US1728.50 an ounce.

Gold, typically a safe-haven asset, has been tracking the fortunes of the euro and stocks, with speculators selling the metal for cash to cover losses in other markets, especially during this period of uncertainty in Europe.

Asian shares and the euro gained modestly on Monday, relieved by the Greek parliament's passage of austerity measures which put the country a step closer to securing a much-needed bailout fund and avoiding a messy default.

"The Chinese guys are still buying. Whenever there is a dip in prices, they will buy. There's no change in their attitude," said a physical dealer in Hong Kong, who trades gold bars.

"They are still buying today, because I think the downside is limited for the time being. Sentiment has improved a little bit.��

China has instructed its banks to embark on a huge roll-over of loans to local governments, the Financial Times reported, aiming to give itself more time to deal with a debt hangover from the global financial crisis.

Gold futures drop on weak Asian cues

Gold futures prices declined by Rs 114 to Rs 28,005 per 10 grams today largely due to a weakening trend overseas as strengthening dollar curbed the demand for the precious metal.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in April fell by Rs 114, or 0.41 per cent, to Rs 28,005 per 10 grams, with a business turnover of 1,667 lots.

Similarly, the metal for delivery in June lost Rs 113, or 0.40 per cent, to Rs 28,350 per 10 grams, with a trade volume of 77 lots.

A weakening trend in the Asian region after rating agency Moody's cut the ratings of six European nations, strengthening the dollar and reducing demand for alternative investments, mainly put pressure on the gold prices at futures trade here, analysts said.

Meanwhile, gold dropped by 0.40 per cent to $1,715.07 an ounce in early trade today in Singapore.

"Overnight demand was good as prices have come down... but now buying is stable," said a dealer with a state-run bullion importing bank.

Global gold edged lower, tracking a weaker euro, as wary investors focused on whether Greece will be able to convince Europe to grant a much-needed bailout and implement unpopular reforms.

Gold ends lower, logs third-straight session loss

Gold futures settled lower Tuesday to log their third losing session in a row, as pressure from a rally in the U.S. dollar outweighed support from weaker-than-expected U.S. retail sales and uncertainty over whether Greece will get a second bailout.

�We saw gold reacting to the dollar, rallying close to flat this morning, but as the dollar has rallied we�ve seen gold sell off,� said Tom Essaye, editor of the 7:00�s Report, a daily commentary on equity and commodity markets and the economy.

�Gold is displaying weakness and is struggling to break through resistance at $1,750 an ounce as traders hesitate to add to positions,� said Mark O�Byrne, executive director at GoldCore.

For now, gold prices are consolidating between $1,700 and $1,763 � and more consolidation at these levels may be necessary prior to gold challenging $1,800, said O�Byrne, in emailed comments.

�However, significant macroeconomic and geopolitical risk and the appalling fiscal state of most major industrial nations means that gold will almost certainly eke out further gains in all currencies in the coming months,� he said.

Investors remained cautious towards Greece ahead of a euro-zone finance ministers meeting to approve a second bailout for the nation. The meeting had been scheduled for Wednesday, but Reuters reported it may be delayed. Read more in Europe Markets.

Investors also continued to digest late Monday news of debt rating cuts by Moody�s Investors Service on Spain, Italy, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Malta. Moody�s also cut outlooks on France, Britain and Austria, but those countries retained their ratings for now. Read more on the downgrades.

The Bank of England, in its latest quarterly inflation report, said Britain's annual consumer price inflation rate is likely to fall sharply in coming months and is likely to be below the central bank's 2% target for much of its two-year forecast period.

The report warned that economic growth is likely to remain sluggish in the near term due to weak growth in the country's export markets and slowing activity in the euro zone.

The Bank of England appears "to be backing up the markets' assumption that we won't see policy tightening for at least another two years," said James Knightley, economist at ING Bank. British annual inflation fell back to 3.6% in January from 4.2% in December.

Gold traders are getting more bullish after billionaire hedge-fund manager John Paulson told investors it�s time to buy the metal as protection against inflation caused by government spending. Twelve of 22 surveyed by Bloomberg expect prices to gain next week and five were neutral.
Paulson & Co., the $23 billion hedge fund run by Paulson, had cut its stake in the SPDR Gold Trust, the largest exchange- traded fund backed by bullion, in the three months to Dec. 31.

Central banks are expanding their bullion reserves for the first time in a generation, adding 439.7 tons last year, the most in almost five decades, the London-based World Gold Council said yesterday. They may buy a similar amount in 2012, it said.

�Over the past 10 years, the mood has changed from selling to buying and we�ve seen emerging markets -- India, Russia, Thailand and Korea -- all add gold to their reserves,� Albert Cheng, the Far East managing director at the council, said in a Bloomberg Television interview today. �The trend, I think, is continuing.�

"Gold may remain in a consolidation phase in the near term, as it is lacking a catalyst," said Hou Xinqiang, an analyst at Jinrui Futures in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.

"The supportive factors -- euro zone debt crisis and expectation on loosening monetary policies around the world -- have been around for a while and gold needs something new to break the range."

The rising tensions between Iran and the West, which pushed Brent crude futures above $120 a barrel, could surface as a key driver for gold if the situation deteriorates, he added.

Gold is showing faint movement in the Asia session today, however it moved above the resistance of $1760 an ounce and if it sustains above that level it may see $1800 levels. The China manufacturing data also supported the sentiments in the markets today.

HSBC said Wednesday the initial flash estimate for its February survey of Chinese manufacturing rose from January's level but remained slightly in contractionary territory. The flash reading of the manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 49.7 from a final print of 48.8 the previous month. The final version, along with the results of a separate, government-sponsored manufacturing PMI survey, are due out March 1.

International gold futures got a shot in arm after Japan unexpectedly expanded its asset-purchase program and after Europe agreed to pass the second tranche of Greece debt deal. The COMEX April gold has rallied by over $50 since the Japan step as the easing of the Japanese Yen enhanced liquidity in the markets.

Gold slips as Europe concerns linger; oil supports

(Reuters) - Gold prices slipped on Monday, weighed by modest risk aversion across commodities as concerns about the euro zone remained, though high oil prices cushioned the slide.

Bullion prices rallied more than 3 percent last week, as investors took relief after Greece secured a bailout and expectations of further monetary easing boosted gold's appeal as a good inflation hedge.

During a weekend meeting of Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers, euro zone nations were told to put up more money to fight their debt crisis if they wants more help from the rest of the world.

"There is a softer turn across commodities after the G20 added to the risk anxiety," said Nick Trevethan, senior commodity strategist at ANZ in Singapore.

"Gold failed to break the $1,780 resistance last week and is likely to bounce between $1,760 and $1,780, but the eventual breakout will be towards the upside."

Spot gold lost 0.3 percent to $1,774.94 an ounce by 0340 GMT, after posting a 3.3-percent gain last week. It hit a five-month high of $1,787.11 last Thursday.

U.S. gold was little changed at $1,777.

Technical analysis suggested that gold could rise towards $1,797 an ounce during the day, said Reuters market analyst Wang Tao.

Dollar gains following G-20 meeting

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) � The dollar gained on Monday, with the euro falling from a three-month high, after the Group of 20 nations refused to boost funding for the International Monetary Fund until the euro zone increases the size of its own regional firewall.

G-20 finance ministers, meeting over the weekend in Mexico City, said that they supported adding funds, via the IMF, to shore up the euro zone�s finances. But Europe first must contribute more money, they said. See report on G-20 statement.

The meeting �made one thing very clear: there is undoubted scepticism on the part of the international backers regarding the handling of the crisis in Europe,� said currency analysts at Commerzbank. �Many parties in particular stressed the necessity of an efficient mechanism for containing the crisis. It will be difficult for Europe to avoid these demands long term.�

European stocks declined and U.S. equities initially followed lower, but turned positive in late morning action, buoyed by a positive U.S. report on pending home sales and news that Germany�s parliament approved the second bailout for Greece. Read about Germany, Greece bailout.

Markets are expecting euro-area banks to draw around 450 billion euros in fresh 3-year financing, slightly less than the �489 billion borrowed at the first LTRO in December, said currency strategists at Forex.com.

�Should banks take up less than �400 billion, we think European government bond markets may be disappointed and we could see yields start to move higher again, which might take some of the wind out of the euro�s sails,� they wrote in a note.

Gold rebounded on Thursday as physical bullion investors were tempted back to the market by the previous session's 5 percent price plunge, its biggest one-day drop since before the collapse of Lehman Brothers in October 2008.

Spot prices fell more than 5 percent on Wednesday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gave no hints that a third round of quantitative easing, which had been a key support of gold prices, was imminent in the world's largest economy.

"We had a sense that the gold market was increasingly pricing in QE3, and obviously Bernanke has put a dampener on that," said Standard Bank analyst Walter de Wet.

In key Asian physical gold markets overnight, jewelers, traders and investors rushed to take advantage of the nearly $100 drop in prices. "It's been a long time since we (saw) such decent buying," said one Hong Kong-based dealer.

"We've seen physical flows coming off steadily since the beginning of February," said de Wet. "The physical demand is just not there when gold is at $1,750-$1,800, and you really need that on top of the financial demand to push gold much higher."

He added: "We've seen some decent buying below $1,700 early this morning. That is coming through, but it will probably fall away as we reach the $1,750 level."


"We think a large part of why gold conceded so much came down to three other factors - $1,800 was proving to be too much of a hurdle and a certain staleness had entered the market; positioning had increased very swiftly in recent weeks; and physical demand has been non-existent," said UBS in a note.

"What the physical community do from here is hugely important," it added.

Gold may decline for a third day alongside equities and other metals after China said it�s targeting slower growth this year, even as holdings in exchange- traded products backed expanded to a record.

�Bullion fell after China, viewed by many as the engine of the global economy, cut its 2012 growth target to an eight-year low,� said Lynette Tan, investment analyst at Phillip Futures Ltd. �The precious metal could pull back further.�

China yesterday trimmed its growth forecast to 7.5 percent from an 8 percent goal in place since 2005. The Dollar Index was little changed today before a report forecast to show that�s Europe�s economy shrank in the fourth quarter, adding to signs that the debt crisis is slowing growth in the region.

�Sentiment in the market has been dented after gold tested and failed to reclaim the $1,800 level,� said Wang Honggang, a metals analyst at CIFCO Research Institute. �While the dollar�s recent strength is bearish for gold, the performance of the ETPs has been very encouraging.�

In the energy market, US crude oil futures were steady in post-settlement trading after news that major powers had accepted Iran's offer for talks about its disputed nuclear programme, easing concern about supply disruptions.

SYDNEY (MarketWatch) � Gold futures broke through the $1,700-an-ounce level in electronic trading on Friday, as optimism about a Greek debt deal helped spur buying across commodity and equity markets.

The rise puts the metal on track for a third session of gains as investors cheered an expected resolution a Greek debt-restructure that will likely clear the way for a second round of financial aid.

Reports late Thursday said Greece had completed a crucial debt-swap with private creditors, which would avert a straight bond default and a fresh wave of financial distress across the euro zone. Read more on Greece's debt deal.

Gold Steady Above $1,700 In Asian Trade

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - The price of gold was firm in Asian trading Friday even as the U.S. dollar steadied versus a basket of currencies.

Gold for April delivery, the most actively traded contract, edged up $5.00 to $1,703.70 an ounce. Yesterday, gold ended higher near $1,700 on global cues anticipating a resolution to the Greek debt swap deal. Prices were also fueled by inflation concerns on the reported bond buying program being considered by the U.S Federal Reserve.

(Reuters) - The dollar hovered around three-week highs against a basket of major currencies in Asia on Monday, having gained ground late last week after upbeat U.S. jobs data was seen lessening the chance of fresh stimulus from the Federal Reserve this week.

The euro, however, struggled after suffering what traders described as a buy-the-rumour-sell-the-fact fall on Greece's bond swap deal with private creditors which will clear the way for a new bailout.

"Although the success of the Greek...deal is a positive development, we remain bearish on the euro's prospects in coming months," analysts at Barclays Capital wrote in a client note.

Key concerns include uncertainty about the actual settlement of Greek CDS, or default insurance contracts, how well Athens can implement fiscal austerity and the potential for problems to develop in other peripheral euro zone countries.

They also said monetary conditions in the euro area will remain very loose compared to the United States, where the Fed is unlikely to ease at its policy meeting on Tuesday given a more robust growth picture lately.

U.S. jobs data on Friday showed employers added more than 200,000 workers to their payrolls for a third straight month in February, a sign the economy was strengthening.

"That is certainly supportive for the dollar," said Greg Gibbs, strategist at RBS in Sydney.

Currency speculators in the week ended March 6 increased bets in favor of the U.S. dollar, data from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission showed on Friday.

March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Gold dropped for the first time in four days as investors reduced bets on the metal�s advance and as better-than-expected economic data strengthened the dollar, damping bullion�s appeal as an alternative investment.

�The world looks like a better place with global data pointing to economic stabilization and Greece pulling through for now, driving up the dollar, commodities and stock markets,� said Ye Yanwu, head of research at Everbright Futures Co. �CFTC positioning suggests the bullish momentum is slowing and we may see gold trend lower in the near term, especially if the dollar stays strong.�

U.S. payrolls gained more than forecast in February and Greece completed its government debt swap needed to avert default. That sent global stocks and commodities higher last week and helped gold rebound from a one-month low of $1,663.30 on March 6 to end the week almost unchanged. Assets in exchange- traded products backed by the metal rose to a record 2,408.391 metric tons on March 9, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

The dollar was higher against most peers before a report tomorrow forecast to show retail sales in the U.S. rose in February, damping speculation the Federal Reserve will add to monetary stimulus. It was near the highest level in more than three weeks against a six-currency basket including the euro.

�I think everybody is staying on the sidelines. On the investment side especially, people still try to keep more cash on hand. They have no intention to buy a substantial amount of gold right now,� said Dick Poon, manager of precious metals at Heraeus in Hong Kong.

�There�s not much going on, especially on the physical side,� said Poon, adding that investors were also scrutinising Europe�s current efforts to solve the debt crisis.

�It�s all about wait-and-see. I think we can expect to see good physical demand if gold price falls below $1,700. On and off, we are still seeing some buying, but it�s not much,� said a dealer in Singapore. �Indonesia was a good buyer last week.�

(Reuters) - Gold fell for a third day on Wednesday as investors switched to equities after the U.S. Federal Reserve vowed to keep interest rates low until 2014, while platinum prices held at premiums to bullion on lingering worries about supply disruption.

Investors also ditched gold in favor of the dollar after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke offered no clues on whether there will be another round of monetary easing, which would offer support to bullion as a safe haven.

"Gold is just caught in a downdraft again after Bernanke didn't really talk about quantitative easing. But there is still this deep-seated theme of central bank buying and strong retail demand from emerging Asia, particularly China," said Nick Trevethan, a senior commodity strategist at ANZ in Singapore. "The bottom of the market is about $1,650 at the moment, but we won't rule out another stab at resistance at $1,700."

Quantitative easing, or major asset purchases by the Fed, keeps interest rates and borrowing costs low, which in theory makes gold more attractive compared with yield- or dividend-bearing assets such as bonds or stocks.

The Fed said the economy was "expanding moderately", although growth still faced significant downside risks. The assessment of the economy's expansion was unchanged from the Fed's January statement.

Investors are now looking to the Fed's policy meetings in April and June for decisions about any new directions for policy.

"Gold has been caught in this kind of range for too long. If it continues like this, we will all turn into stones here," said a physical dealer in Singapore.

"Personally, I believe the last round of sell-down has washed out the long bullish stakeholders, while those who are interested in taking new positions are not doing so because they expect the price to go even lower."

(Reuters) - Gold rose more than half a percent on Monday after firm oil prices prompted safe haven buying from investors and speculators, while technical buying also resurfaced after bullion bounced from its weakest level in two months.

"You can see there's short-covering. I think it's technical. The upside will be at $1,675 to $1,680, and there will be some resistance there," said Ronald Leung, director of Lee Cheong Gold Dealers in Hong Kong.

"Gold wants to break test these levels, but if it can't, it will go back to $1,600 again. Let's see what happens to the market after the increase in India's duty."

"I see some light selling from Thailand. It's very light. I would think some people are waiting for prices to go down to the $1,650 level," said a dealer in Singapore, referring to demand from jewelers.
