Reviewer's Opinion
The Enermax NAXN 650W power supply had solid performance. If you look at my test setup, I ran all high quality parts with good overclocks. The CPU I used is one of the more power hungry, top of the line, processors from AMD. The video card is currently at the top of AMD's lineup, short of the 6990 dual GPU card. Anything more in the GPU department has a requirement for a better PSU then this, so it is one of the best single slot GPU's I could have used for the test. The only better card that I have is the newest Dual GPU 560 Ti 2 WIN, however the power requirements from EVGA state a 700W psu with at least 50 amps on the 12V. Keep in mind that we do real system testing and not with artificial load testers that put unrealistic burdens on power supplies. With this completely overclocked, high end system, I was able to top out the OCCT test around 545W load on the NAXN, which is within 84% of the 650W rating. I had no stability issues or crashes during the load test. I also didn't notice any significant noises from the system. The NAXN ran near dead silent the entire time. The only time I could hear the PSU was when I shut down the system. This was because the heat protection runs the 12cm fan for an extra 30-60 seconds after power down. Even then it was barely noticeable.
The rails all held pretty solid through the testing. The 3.3V barely budged on both the motherboard sensors and the multimeter test. The 5V rail remained strong as well with little ripple. The 12V is always the most temperamental on PSUs. With the multimeter I saw about a 0.06V shift while the OCCT caught about the same 0.06V-0.07V swing from the baseline. Overall the ripple was very low across the board, which is acceptable for a PSU of this price and caliber. The only real issue I could see was the lack of more then 2 PCI-E connectors. In the AMD lineup, the lesser cards ( anything less then the 6770) need only a single PCI-E, so there is crossfire potential. However for the cards greater then the 6770, 2 connections are needed per card. So crossfire for something like a 6790 or 6850 would require the molex adapters, which is a pain. I know this isn't "certified" Crossfire or SLI, but it is within the power requirements.
Overall, I think the Enermax NAXN 650W power supply is a good buy for people looking for a solid PSU at a good price. Enthusiasts and high end users are going to want more, which will cost more. However, single card budget gamers, and average users, can find good use for the NAXN 650W. There is plenty of power and stability to power a respectable gaming system, with a bit of room to spare. All of the added features are just a bonus to ensure longevity of the system as a whole.
