The Japanese subsidiary of General Motors Co. will showcase a prototype mini-size electric vehicle at the Tokyo Motor Show in December.
The car is part of the "Smart Mobility City 2011" exhibit organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association and devoted to next-generation environmentally-friendly vehicles.
The automaker also plans to offer visitors test rides in the "Volt," an electric vehicle equipped with an auxiliary gasoline-powered engine that is on sale in the United States.
While no major U.S. automakers will be represented at the biennial motor show this year, GM decided its Japanese arm should have at least a small presence.
GM's offering is the "Chevrolet EN-V," a two-seat electric concept vehicle with only two wheels. It was unveiled at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010.
The exterior of the vehicle will be modified partially for the first public release in Japan.
The vehicle is equipped with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. The front side of the capsule-shaped vehicle opens up to allow the driver and passenger to get in or out.
GM envisages its use in a future urban setting in around 2030.
The 42nd Tokyo Motor Show will be held at Tokyo Big Sight. It opens to the public on Dec. 3 and runs through Dec. 11.
